Museo Ebraico di Venezia
Venice, 2021-ongoing
The Museo Ebraico di Venezia (Venetian Jewish Museum) is currently undergoing a significant architectural renovation and expansion. Unique in the world, the museum contains not one but three synagogues that date from the renaissance period. The €9 million project will restore the temples and create new exhibition spaces and expanded amenities to increase visitor capacity and reposition the museum as a contemporary centre of Jewish art and culture.
The pre-existing structural components of the Museo Ebraico were physically disjointed and in need of considerable updating. D.H.office is working with the museum leadership to reimagine the future of the institution and implement the physical reconstruction required to achieve their goals. The building project includes a large entry foyer, a new lecture hall, a temporary exhibition space, the recreation of a 16th century Jewish dwelling in its original location, and a bookshop and cafe to be housed in a newly acquired space on the ground floor. The renovation will also include the construction of two elevators and the installation of centralised temperature control, modern electrical and plumbing, and a security system throughout the new complex.
Collaborating closely with the Jewish community and the museum’s director, D.H.office is providing comprehensive support to the construction and renovation process, acting as project manager, liaising between all interested parties, and providing budget control in order to ensure the works are delivered on time and on budget. We are also managing documentation of the project and offering fundraising support to bolster resources for this important cultural venue.
