Alexander Chekmenev: Testimone–Volti dell'Ucraina
Chiesa di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, Venice, 2022
One of the premier Ukrainian portrait photographers and photojournalists working today, Alexander Chemmenev presents a selection of portraits drawn from several series made in his home country, from the 1990s to the current war. Taking his fellow countrymen as his subject, Chekmenev captures both the quotidian and historic moments of post-Soviet Ukraine, from Lilies—images of patients in a psychiatric ward made in the late 1990s—to his most recent Citizens of Kyiv series, in which he photographed the capital city’s residents with his medium format camera during the early stages of Russian attacks and Ukrainian resistance.
D.H.office lent its services pro bono to produce the exhibition, organising the production of the photographic prints, including framing, as well as the installation of the works. Presenting these images of the Ukrainian people as captured by a leading portraitist such as Chekmenev was an important if humble gesture in support of Ukraine during this time of war with Russia.
